Need to take a deep breath...
...and perhaps a break from SquidU for a while.

I'm really not happy with the atmosphere there these days. There's so much sniping, griping, whining and (IMHO) over-moderation of posts that it isn't funny any more - nor is it particularly helpful to me as a lensmaster.

I know it's not really different from a lot of other internet forums, but still. It's not being productive to my efforts to do well on Squidoo and while I appreciate some of the useful info in Tricks of the Trade, I don't like the way we're both muzzled and yet also over-obsessed with criticizing HQ there at the moment. I think there's a definite hint in Tom Maybrier's blog post about how the vocal minority doesn't always represent the best intentions and needs of the silent majority, and that's what's going on way too much right now at SquidU IMHO. Note that yes, I was EXTREMELY vocal on SquidU and the HQ blog about recent confusing actions and contradictory statements regarding image copyright. Am I'm annoyed that I've posed specific questions to HQ members regarding issues on image copyright that have gone unanswered. But the current whining in the forums about the new plagiarism checker, and how it's flagging some lenses for copying & pasting Amazon descriptions, is really getting under my skin. I've yet to have any lens flagged - not saying it couldn't happen, but I just don't create those kinds of lenses myself that are just blindly promoting items I have no personal familiarity with nor ability to Write My Own Damn Recommendations for.

So I just learned how to set up my own website on Word Press and my question to you is would it be comparably profitable for you to just run your own content site? Word Press is fairly easy to get up and running (and I could help) and you could easily run adwords and referrals etc.

Probably the answer is no because Squid drives a bunch of traffic that you wouldn't otherwise get, but it might be worth giving it a try to just compare.

cool, I do recall the page, just didn't recall you going through setting up WP etc.

I just posted about my WP experiences getting a site up, overall positive.

Well actually, I'm hosting it on Dreamhost, just using their "one-click" install of WordPress. Since I have the domain space no reason not to keep complete control of it.

Though I will say, WP is great when I've found some of my work plagiarized on their hosting and submitted a DMCA. The copied content was quickly removed by them.

repeat commenting because of account-fail!
No, it's definitely not comparable.

I've had a (for-profit, regularly updated) WordPress blog with Google Adsense for about a year now, and barely made $47. And Google won't pay out until you hit a $100 threshhold, you can't have competing links, and unless you're blogging about Justin Bieber or otherwise employing blackhat techniques it's very, very hard to make money just on blogging. Plus you have to have a seriously single-focus niche topic for each blog, and it gets to be a nightmare.

Right now I easily pull in $150-250/month on Squidoo, depending on Affiliate sales (ebay, Amazon, CafePress, Allposters) plus tier ranking. With 2 lenses solid in Tier 1 that's an almost guaranteed $90-100/month, with about $10 upfront for every T2 lens and $0.30-0.50 for a Tier 3.

I'm basically just complaining that there are a lot of community issues on Squidoo that can honestly make it better to not be involved in the forum. There are mods who I feel wield their power too gladly, there are people who will "ding" lenses or report them if they disagree with your point of view. So honestly it just seems better to sit back, do your own thing, and not get involved in the wank and whining that often goes on.

That's just hard for me to do because I have such a big mouth :)
